“This is somethin’ serious, it’s nothin’ like the common cold…”
After sharing the stage with all-star acts that include the likes of D-12, Tyga, and D-Pryde and performing at a myriad of venues around the GTA, Mississauga rapper TOONIE TOONZ has finally given the public what they want in the form of his first mixtape: The Cold Volume 1.
A nasty compilation of 19 covers, the mixtape features beats from a wide array of hip-hop’s heavy hitters intended to tide you over until the release of Toonz’ first album, 21 Years Later. And it does the job well seeing as it’s the only CD that graced my car stereo for the last little while. The mixtape plays on two opposing angles. The familiarity of the beats from crowd favourites such as Jay-Z & Kanye, Curren$y, Odd Future, Drake, and Childish Gambino lures you in, while Toonie holds it down often in a manner that leaves the originals in the dust. The product of all-nighters, swishers, and codeine cups, The Cold Vol 1 is a perfect addition to your summer party soundtrack.
A stand-out favourite of mine would have to be “Lord Knows”, extracting the Rick Ross & Drizzy mutterings out of the original Take Care cut and leaving a soulful and inspiring byproduct. Tunes like “The Cold Intro”, the playful and spontaneous “N*ggas in Montreal” recording session are sure to continue the trend of an extremely hyped crowd at any venue from Toronto to Montreal and beyond. Although collaboration was a rarity on this effort, Mississauga representers Jazzy Jay and LNDL Raps hold their own in their respective features, with the latter providing an interesting flip on Odd Future’s “Oldie” that arguably puts the OF boys to shame.
